Matt Kimmel

Term of Office: Jan. 2010-Jan. 2014

E-mail: Matt Kimmel

 Matt was born and raised in South Jordan, UT. The South Jordan of Matt's youth was a farming community with a growing demand of residential and commercial growth. After Matt graduated from Alta High School in 1995 he served an LDS mission to Málaga, Spain.

Upon his return in 1999 he attended college during which time he also met and married Ashley Bevan in 2001 and bought a home in West Jordan. Matt finished his study of languages at the University of Utah in 2005.

In 2006 a decision was made to move and Syracuse was a great fit due to its similarity to the South Jordan of the 1980's and 1990's, in regards to the mix of a cozy more rural feel combined with commercial and residential growth. Now with three children under the age of five Matt is a busy husband, father, provider, and public servant. Constitutional and Founding Fathers study and reading are some of Matt's favorite activities.  Matt also loves the outdoors and many sports.

Quotes that have helped shape Matt's philosophy on the proper role of government;

George Washington- “Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.”

John Adams- “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

Benjamin Franklin- “Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.”

Thomas Jefferson- “The price of Freedom is eternal vigilance.”

Douglas Peterson

Term of Office: Jan. 2008 - Jan. 2012

E-mail: Doug Peterson

Doug Peterson grew up in Syracuse, attending Syracuse Elementary, Cook Elementary, Syracuse Jr. High, Clearfield High, and Weber State University. After serving an LDS mission in Oklahoma City, he married Stephanie Earl, and they built their home in Syracuse. They have two wonderful sons.

Councilman Peterson is also Coach Peterson, having spent the last 13 years as a teacher and a coach in the Davis School District. He currently teaches P.E. at Kaysville Jr. High, where he also has responsibilities coaching basketball and track, as well as being the athletic director and department head. He loves this combination of sports and working with young people, and finds it very enjoyable and rewarding.

Doug was elected to the city council in November 2007, after losing a very close race in 2005. He finds the grass-roots nature of municipal government to be fascinating, and feels that this is where he can have the most impact on every day life, and where he can give back to his community.

Doug received a master's degree in recreation, and believes that providing parks and recreational opportunities for residents of Syracuse is crucial, along with providing high quality public safety and other services. He also feels that he must be a responsible steward of citizen's tax dollars.

Doug loves to build and fix things, and is always looking for the next project either at his own home, or to help friends and family members in their homes. He also spends a lot of spare time playing, singing, writing, listening to, and otherwise enjoying music.
